When it comes to diversity, newsrooms in the U.S. are starting to look in the mirror and reflect on their diversity and inclusion practices. STAT is a pretty new outlet and may be thinking more about the business side of things than diversity, but after looking at their masthead, STAT might want to consider taking a look in the mirror themselves.

The STAT team, a staff of 50, is pretty evenly split between male and female: 22 female staff members and 28 males. But 42 of these people are white; only 8 staff members are people of color. Of those eight people, it appears that only three have a role in the content production and editorial process. Seventeen of 31 reporters/editors/producers are male while 14 are female. And, to reiterate, only three of those 31 are people of color.
Unfortunately, STAT’s higher-ups also lack diversity. The senior positions are largely taken by white males–white males account for seven out of 11 leadership positions.
On the “front page” of STAT on Sunday, April 22, eight out of 12 writers were white males. Three of these white males were guest writers. Only one writer was a person of color.
Here’s the full diversity break down:
Females: 22: reporters/writers/editors: 14
Males: 28 reporters/writers/editors: 17
White People: 42
People of Color: 8-sales, multimedia producer, correspondent, director of operations and finance, web developer, columnist, editor, lead engineer.
Leadership: white male executive editor, 2 white male managing editors, white male sales director, Hispanic female west coast sales manager, white male director of multimedia and creating, white male owner and publisher, white male head of product, Hispanic male director of operations, white male chief revenue officer, white male office manager, white female director of marketing.
